Of all the world-popular Spanish artists, there is one who stood out during the Golden Age of the country when plenty of painters were also making their name on the world. One of the many masters who made Spain reknowned in the genre of visual arts and who enriched the art of painting is Diego Velasquez. This artist is truly one of a kind in terms of technique and masterpieces; he is a realist painter and his vision in his art is something that was not yet popular during his time.
Much of Diego Velasquez’s childhood was not something out of the ordinary; he grew up with five other siblings and was the eldest of the brood. As early as eleven years old he started to learn painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a exceptional artist which allowed him to paint as a professional. Over the years, Velasquez mostly created religious scenes and sold them for profit in churches and taverns, eventually being able to buy his own house and rent out another one; this was how he supported his family after he had married Francisco Pacheco’s daughter.
Diego Velasquez created many of unique paintings that made him well-known and one of the country’s most influential personalities. The Surrender of Breda is an example of his internationally popular artwork which he created after he met the Marques de Spinola; it is said that when the painting was shown to Spinola, he was so amazed at how Velasquez was able to expertly paint an expression of emotions through realism which was only starting to receive popularity during those times. However the most famous masterpiece that Diego painted is Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; it is regarded as the most viewed painting in the whole world, and it is evident that most people who are not very much familiar with Spain’s history in the world of painting knew only one Spanish painter, that is Diego Velasquez, because of Las Meninas.
